Ignacio Vilar

The director Ignacio Vilar spent his childhood in Castrofolla, a village in Petín de Valdeorras (Ourense, Galicia). On cold winter nights around the fire at his grandparents´ home, he heard immemorial stories told in Galician language. Life in the village, the relationship with nature and the stories he heard by the fire would stimulate and feed his passion for cinema.
When he was eight years old, he saw a movie for the first time and this made him feel astonished. For him, the light shining on the screen was the same as the fire at his grandparents´ home. Cinema became the means to continue telling stories. In his adolescence he entered a boarding school in the city of Ourense. There he kept on watching movies in several theaters: Xesteira, Mari, Principal, Avenida, Losada.
At the age of eighteen he moved to Barcelona and founded there, in the Central University, a film school where the great films of all times were studied, as well as editing, acting direction, filming documentaries and short films . He also initiated a project of film distribution in different neighbourhoods of Barcelona, and in many cities, towns and villages of Catalunya. The Filmoteca provides him with the opportunity to see the best world cinema.
In 1989 he won the Carlos Velo Award for the script Ollo Birollo. He returned to Galicia and started the production company Vía Láctea Films, where he directs 35mm short – films, documentaries and documentary series for television. He also directs the feature films Ilegal (2001), Un bosque de música (2003), Pradolongo (2007), Vilamor (2011) and A Esmorga (2014).
